Tomos Lewis from Clydach decided to study the Education Studies: Primary course in the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø because he longed to work with children and young people, and believed that the primary years phase within children’s education is essential to forming their future.

He said:

“The field of education is continually changing with research, teaching methods and new technologies. This course ensured that I received the most up to date information.â€

Tomos made the decision that he wanted to study in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø after a discussion with a number of former students and lecturers during the University’s open days, and the university’s reputation in education was a significant factor.  The location of the Carmarthen campus was also ideal for Tomos, as he said that the environment provided a peaceful and inspiring location for study.  He added:

“Carmarthen campus itself offers a supportive learning environment.  The feeling of a close community allows personal attention from lecturers and nurtures strong relationships between students.  This supportive atmosphere was essential for academic success and personal growth.  The facilities and the modern resources that are available on the campus, including state of the art teaching spaces and abundant library services, ensured that I had everything I needed to succeed academically.â€

Tomos said that the Education Studies: Primary course offers a broad range of different fields to study including examining the foundations of education, history, philosophy, and key theories, alongside curriculum development, direction strategies, and assessment methods.  The programme researches child development, educational psychology, and learning theories, while emphasising cognitive, emotional and social growth. Research methods are covered, thus helping students with both qualitative and quantitative techniques to assist with the independent project at the end of the third year.

For Tomos:

“My favourite thing about the course was the flexibility between the studies and work experience.  It allowed me to apply theoretical information in real word placements, improving my understanding and my ability to test key concepts.  Practical experience provides practical learning, which is essential for developing effective teaching strategies and class management skills.â€

Tomos was fortunate in winning the Main Scholarship of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. He said:

“Winning the Main Scholarship of Coleg Cymraeg was an incredible honour and gave great satisfaction. It was encouraging to be recognised for my commitment to study through the medium of Welsh.  The scholarship not only provided financial assistance but also validated my dedication to protect and promote the Welsh language in education.  It ensures that I am able to teach future generations in a way that respects and nurtures their linguistic and cultural identity.  This bilingual method enhances my learning experience and prepares me to have a meaningful impact.â€

Tomos received special support from his lecturers.

“The lecturers were not only exceptionally informed and experienced in their fields but also exceptionally supportive and approachable. Their passion for education was apparent in their entertaining teaching methods and their commitment to help students to succeed.  They provided valuable insights, practical advice, and constructive feedback, which enhanced my learning experience greatly.  Their dedication to nurturing a positive and inclusive learning environment had a substantial impact on my academic and personal growth.â€

Helen Griffiths, Manager of Welsh Medium Education Studies Programmes at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø said:

“It has been a pleasure to have Tomos on our BA Education Studies: Primary programme and we are extremely proud of his achievements and passion to study through the medium of Welsh.  We wish him all the best now as he starts his PGCE course to be a qualified teacher.â€

Tomos is looking forward to continuing with his studies in the University by following the PGCE Primary course on the Swansea campus.
