Owain's ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Experience
Owain's BA Fine Art Experience
What was your favourite thing about Swansea campus?
The facilities in the Fine Art department, such as the studios, installation spaces, life drawing room, the ceramic rooms, print making room and library, were excellent. Having places to relax and contemplate on the artwork I was creating at the time was also useful.
Why did you choose ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø?
I wanted to study in Wales and ideally wanted to study locally. My brother had studied there previously and had great experiences there. The Fine Art course, together with the lecturers, were highly recommended to me by him.
What did you enjoy outside your studies?
When studying at Swansea College of Art, Covid 19 affected a large amount of my time, however, when time and circumstances allowed, I enjoyed visiting art galleries and exhibitions, walking and being outdoors. I enjoyed listening to music, watching films, and attending my local chapel.
What are you doing now, how did you get to where you are and how has your course helped you in your career?
After graduating, I worked in a studio at the College after winning the Step Change Fellowship Programme Benevolent Fund Award (2021–2022). I then worked at the College as a Welsh-medium Artist Mentor working with students.
I currently work as an artist and as a Design Officer/Graphic Designer for the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
My studies at Swansea College of Art have clearly helped my career as an artist. The experiences I gained there, and the guidance I received from my lecturers, have fed into my practice.
What was your favourite thing about your course?
Being able to work in a studio of my own, with the freedom to experiment and develop my work, was very beneficial. Studying the subject for three years allowed me to improve my existing skills and experiment in various fields and with different media. It also deepened my understanding of working in the art world.
I was introduced to new areas in the field of art including sculpture, life drawing, welding, photography, and audio. Having guidance from lecturers who were professional artists was also very valuable.
Would you recommend ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and why?
Swansea College of Art is an excellent place to study Fine Art for several reasons. There are great lecturers there who specialize in their subject and who introduce students to new aspects within Fine Art. The College offers opportunities to experiment in other areas, and the fact that students can study through the medium of Welsh is another bonus. I studied part of my degree through the medium of Welsh and being able to do so was important to me.
