Nathan's ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Experience
Nathan's BA Computer Games Design Experience
What was your favourite thing about Swansea campus?
One of my favourite things about the campus would be the environment. Being on a creative course we used our day-to-day environments as inspiration to create new environments and experiences for players. Having the other departments around us allowed me to generate new unique ideas for my work.
Why did you choose ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø?
I chose ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø because of the experience the academics bring to the course and how they could help me reach my goals as a games designer. This gave me confidence, knowing no matter what I did, if that was failing or pushing the boundaries, that they would give me support and feedback so that I could get the best out of myself and the course.
What did you enjoy outside your studies?
I loved the social environment, being able to meet new people from other courses and go out to gain new experiences. One of the highlights was going to Insomnia with the team to not only have fun, but also to talk to game developers and ask for tips and tricks.
What are you doing now, how did you get to where you are and how has your course helped you in your career?
I am now working for ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø in the department Digital Creativity and Learning. My team is called Digital Experience and Engagement. I started here on a graduate role and now am full time and my role is VR Technology Specialist. I work on creating VR applications, Managing VR, Immersive Rooms, digital tours, drones and more. My course helped me get here by allowing me to experiment and push the boundaries on the technology we had. Without the course I would not feel confident in taking on new technologies and seeing what we can do with them. Looking back on some key areas I found the experience I gained from the academics was critical to my success so far. For this I am very grateful to all academics who taught me.
What was your favourite thing about your course?
It’s hard to decide as there are so many areas which I will always remember and so many highlights as without them I don’t think I would be doing what I do now. If I had to highlight one, it would be learning game history. As much as I push new and innovative technology, I think learning game history showed me how far technology has come and some of the hurdles people and companies have jumped through. I think it’s important to know the past to so you can help improve the future.
Would you recommend ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and why?
I would recommend it 100% as not only does ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø have a range of courses to choose from but they also have some of the best academics, in my opinion, that can teach students a high level of skill in their area. From my experience the high level of the academics was really an inspiration. Also, the community that surrounds ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is fantastic, they support you outside the classroom and there is always some experience or event to keep you entertained
