The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s (ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø) Academy of Sport is celebrating the addition of two highly experienced part-time staff members, whose expertise has already made a significant impact during the first academic term.

Dr Rhys Jones has joined the Academy as Head of Strength and Conditioning, bringing 16 years of professional sports experience. His impressive career includes roles at the English Institute of Sport (now UK Sports Institute), London Wasps, and a decade as Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Scarlets. A graduate of Loughborough University and Swansea University, where he earned his PhD, Dr Jones brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. He said: 

 â€œThere is huge ambition, potential and opportunity at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. I look forward to being able to contribute to the continued growth and success of the Academy of Sport.â€

The Academy has also welcomed Rob Thomas as the new Head of Football. With over 15 years of experience at the FAW Trust as the National Goalkeeper Coach Education Coordinator, Rob has been a driving force behind the development of goalkeeper coaching in Wales. His credentials include overseeing the FAW’s goalkeeper program and delivering courses ranging from Level 1 to the prestigious FAW/UEFA Goalkeeper A Licence. Currently Head of Goalkeeping at EFL’s Newport County AFC, Rob will combine this role with his responsibilities at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. Rob said: 

“The football provision at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø has developed massively over the last two years and I look forward in developing it further.â€

Head of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Academy of Sport Lee Tregoning commented:

“We are delighted to welcome two highly qualified and experienced individuals in their respected fields into the Academy of Sport. Their experience in professional elite sport will be of huge benefit for our student athletes. Their impact has been immediate, Rob has overseen a tremendous start to the football season with the Men’s team currently unbeaten and sitting at the top their league while Rhys has transformed the physical performances of all the Academy of Sport supported Student Union Sports teams and individuals in a short space of time and their have never been in better physical shape. 

“ It’s been a great first term for all the teams as Men’s Football are joined by Men’s Rugby and Women’s Netball who also sit unbeaten at the top of the respective leagues at the moment. All are looking forward to the season resuming after the Christmas break and hopefully continuing in the same manner.â€

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Academy of Sport is set to continue its trajectory of success, with Dr. Rhys Jones and Rob Thomas playing pivotal roles in shaping its future.
