Engineering a Successful Career Through Work-Based Learning
It’s been an exciting and eventful year for Amy Evans, who has completed a four-year degree apprenticeship at ϳԹ, secured a new full-time engineering role with a research institute, and received a prestigious award nomination to top it all off!
Amy completed her Degree Apprenticeship in Advanced Manufacturing Operations with the University and credits her work-based learning. Amy said “Whether you’re just starting out as an engineer or have been in the field for some time, every aspect of this program equips you with new skills and knowledge that are essential for advancing into modern manufacturing. It enables engineers to enhance and further their practice in order to shape the industry of the future.”
As a former project engineer with Zimmer Biomet, a global leader in medical technology, Amy gained recognition for identifying a manufacturing improvement that saved £180,000 annually and reduced the use of solvent-based substances. This achievement led to her being shortlisted for the prestigious Apprenticeship Awards Cymru 2024 as a Higher Apprentice of the Year finalist.
“Undertaking the apprenticeship has been a transformative experience, boosting both my confidence and self-esteem while opening new career opportunities,” said Amy. “With each new skill and every bit of knowledge I gained, my confidence in my abilities increased. I now approach projects and challenges with a stronger sense of certainty and determination”.
Amy has recently joined AMRC Cymru, part of the University of Sheffield as a Senior Manufacturing Research Engineer. Based in both Broughton, North Wales and Baglan, South Wales, funded by the Welsh Government, AMRC Cymru is a member of the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult, a consortium of leading manufacturing and process research centres backed by Innovate UK. It turns world-leading research into practical improvements for industry, helping to boost businesses productivity and sharpen their competitive edge, while saving time, money, and energy. AMRC Cymru fosters collaborations and partnerships between industry, academia, and government to deliver cutting-edge research, development and innovation for better products and processes; while driving forward sustainable manufacturing technologies for net zero, creating the vital step-changes needed in the low-carbon transition.
“I’m incredibly excited to take on this new role at AMRC Cymru. The knowledge and expertise I’ve gained from my degree at ϳԹ, combined with my experience as an engineer in manufacturing, make me confident that I can make a meaningful difference and support the growth of manufacturing in Wales. I’m eager to contribute to the innovative work happening at the AMRC and help drive the future of advanced manufacturing.”
