The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø) welcomed 11 teams of sixth-form students from seven schools across South West Wales for a special Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) event.

Hosted at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s state-of-the-art IQ Building, the event introduced Year 12 students from schools and colleges to an exciting engineering challenge, linking them with industry partners to tackle real-world problems. Each team, comprising up to eight students, was assigned a specific engineering project by companies like National Grid, Spectrum Technologies, and Mii Engineering. These students were tasked with researching and developing innovative solutions in the form of designs, models, or prototypes, to address the challenges their industry partners are facing.

Participating schools included Bishop Gore School, Bishop Vaughan School, Bryntirion Comprehensive School, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Queen Elizabeth High School, St Joseph’s RC School, and Sixth Form Centre, and Gowerton School.

Over the next few months, students will be compiling their findings in a feasibility report, which will be reviewed by a panel of volunteer assessors. They will pitch their final ideas to judging panels, testing their problem-solving skills and ability to present technical concepts in a professional setting.

Rebecca Davies from EESW said: “The students had a fantastic afternoon, not only working on their projects but also learning more about what ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø offers. They explored the university’s apprenticeship programmes and courses such as motorsport engineering and enjoyed a tour of the cutting-edge facilities. These types of events are so valuable in giving students a taste of what a career in engineering can look like.â€

Abi Penny, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Senior Engineering lecturer said: “By hosting events like the EESW welcome event, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is not only nurturing the future generation of engineers but also fostering innovation and creativity, supporting both local industry and national efforts to address the skills shortage in STEM fields.â€
