窪蹋勛圖厙 Digital Degree apprentice Tyler Williamson, 26, is studying for an Applied Data Science Degree and says the University has helped his career, both professionally and personally.

After being diagnosed with hearing loss, Autism and more recently (via the University) with ADHD, Tyler said he had struggled with the traditional methods of learning.

He said: I did quite well through school until the last year, when I struggled immensely with the pressures of society and the typical school environment for being different. I worked for a few years, but nothing really struck a chord with me that would have enabled me to have a full and challenging career, until this opportunity came my way.

Tyler said he applied for the Digital Degree Apprenticeship to study Applied Data Science as he has a keen interest in technology advancements.

I am quite a hands-on learner and really enjoy getting involved with the role which I have through the apprenticeship and the support and training I have received has been great.

My ambition now is to get more involved with AI and to be able to advance in this career pathway.

Tyler said working alongside friendly and knowledgeable colleagues had helped to ease him into his new career.

I have been able to make lots of connections through my work and studies whereas before I struggled with communicating with others at times. In my role at work, I have been tasked with bringing in new changes to databases and software to keep up to date with ever changing legislation. This has involved learning lots of different things and I have more to learn as this project is ongoing. Data quality is also another area that I have also been actively involved in.

Being out of education for 11 years, has been challenging at times but I have had lots of support to help me get started and stuck in again. Working alongside studying has also at times proved very useful to gain the knowledge required.

Tyler said he would recommend the course because it enables you to earn and learn.

Having the work experience related to your degree will better prepare you once you have graduated, he added,

Many graduates may find it tougher to get into the roles they want because many companies also look for employees with experience in the industry too.

This course has really helped me in all aspects of my life professionally and personally. I have gained confidence in my own abilities, of who I am, and I am able to communicate better with others. I have gained valuable skills to carry forward with me and Im now continuously looking to develop and grow in all aspects.
