The ϳԹ (ϳԹ) hosted an inspiring and interactive employability event on November 28, designed to help students build their personal brand and prepare for sustainable employment.

The event, titled “Changemakers: Building Your Personal Brand for Sustainable Employment,” was led by Rachael Wheatley, owner of the creative agency Waters Creative, and attended by second-year BA Graphic Design students from Swansea College of Art as part of their Changemakers module.

Rachael began the event with a motivational talk, sharing her professional journey from employment to freelancing and eventually launching Waters Creative. She encouraged students to embrace confidence and belief in their ideas, stating:

“Everything begins with an idea, but you need to believe in yourself – belief and confidence breed success.”

Her presentation offered practical tips for students aiming to freelance or work in creative studios, equipping them with the skills to navigate a competitive industry.

The session then moved into creative workshops, designed to enhance problem-solving and branding skills.

The event received glowing reviews from students, who appreciated the opportunity to engage with an industry professional. Svitlana Ulianych, a second-year graphic design student, said:

“It is wonderful that we get professionals like Rachael to visit us here at ϳԹ. I really learnt a lot, and Rachael has also agreed to look at my work and give me feedback and advice.”

Lecturer Ian Simmons said: “This event is a testament to ϳԹ’s dedication to providing students with real-world opportunities to connect with industry leaders. By fostering these connections, we ensure students graduate with the competencies they need to thrive in a fast-changing work environment.”

Caroline Thraves, Academic Director Art and Media said: “Hosting employability events for art students is about more than preparing them for the job market. It’s about empowering them to turn their creativity into impactful careers, bridging the gap between their passion and professional success.”
