Matt Satterthwaite is a Lead Technologist at a large defence company. The 32-year-old has just completed an Ordnance Munitions and Explosives BEng Apprenticeship at 窪蹋勛圖厙, being awarded first class honours.

I chose the course because I have always enjoyed technicalities and I really liked the fact that it was a new course, meaning that I would be one of the first to hold the qualification, he said.

My aim was to become a technical specialist within the defence space during a time where the defence industry is really struggling for suitably qualified personnel. A lot of the very unique skillsets have already retired or are rapidly approaching it.

Matt said that whilst at 窪蹋勛圖厙, he enjoyed the industry lecturers as well as meeting and networking with other companies from within the sector.

I also really enjoyed advanced physics and scientific principles of OME design. This is exactly the type of training that has been missing from the defence industry for some time and this knowledge has seriously projected my career.

Matt said he had faced and overcome challenges whilst at university.

COVID obviously happened during my studies, and I also become a father during year 2. The university accommodated this through remote lectures and extenuating circumstances which enabled me to continue studies, he added.

I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this programme, because of the huge problem with skilled and experiences engineers within the defence sector. You will very quickly become your companys expert in this field if you follow this programme.

I started the course as a trainee product development engineer. I am now the technology lead for my sector, leading complex design projects across the land, air and sea sectors and working with cutting edge technologies.

Matt is now planning to continue his career progression within his company but also wants to return to 窪蹋勛圖厙 to guest lecture in some of his areas of specialism.
