A caretaker for a Jewish community in Birmingham has successfully transitioned towards a promising career in healthcare and is today celebrating being awarded a BSc Degree in Health and Social Care from the ϳԹ (ϳԹ).

Wearing academic robes, Oslava Chougleva smiles for the camera; one hand rests on the shoulder of a young girl, her daughter.

Oslava, who was responsible for managing contractors, ensuring security, and maintaining the buildings of the congregation, found inspiration to change career paths after a pivotal conversation with a friend. Intrigued by the potential opportunities in the healthcare sector, she was introduced to the undergraduate Health and Social Care programme.

“ϳԹ, with its rich 200-year history, stood out as an institution that could provide the solid foundation needed for my new career,” she said. “I decided to start with the Level 4 entry to balance my current work commitments and academic pursuits.”

The Health and Social Care programme at ϳԹ has responded to changes in the sector by incorporating new elements of policy and skills and increasing options for students in the rapidly evolving environment of health and social care, and children and young people’s services. The aim is to develop a health and social care workforce that is capable of meeting strategic governmental goals and is prepared for an employment environment of multiple and diverse opportunities.

Despite the initial stress of returning to education—especially with the added challenge of online learning during the first year due to Covid, Oslava said she overcame these hurdles with the support of ϳԹ’s dedicated staff. This perseverance was further demonstrated by securing a nine-month work experience placement with Spectrum Care LTD, working with children with special needs, including Autism. This practical experience was invaluable in integrating academic knowledge with real-world application.

Oslava said: “Balancing academic writing, referencing, and timely submissions was initially daunting, but the structured support at ϳԹ made all the difference. “I highly recommend this course for anyone looking to advance or shift their career trajectory. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained have been instrumental in boosting my confidence and preparing me for future challenges.”
