Campus visit inspires families to take up new learning opportunities

Adult and Family Engagement Groups working with the ��ϳԹ��’s (��ϳԹ��) Widening Access department got a taste of campus life at an event on January 19.

A colourful example of work by Professor Williams, a leading voice in contemporary British Art whose raw and powerful paintings stretch across vast canvases and reference Renaissance portraiture. — An exhibition representing critically acclaimed visual artist, Professor Sue Williams, course director of the ��ϳԹ��’s (��ϳԹ��) Fine Art: Studio Site & Context opens this weekend at one of Cardiff's most important independent artist spaces, Bay Art.

The visit included a Master Class in Advocacy and Sociology, a campus tour and lunch, before a second Master Class in Art, which enabled the group to express themselves through collage design.

��ϳԹ�� is actively removing barriers to participation and supporting students from all backgrounds and circumstances to raise aspirations and fulfil their potential.

The University is committed to ensure that everyone with the determination and desire to access higher education should be able to do and provides a range of options for adults wanting to return to learning, which includes taster sessions, master classes, short courses, and full degree courses.

Donna Williams, one of the Widening Access Officers at ��ϳԹ�� said: “We work closely with individuals in our communities, like Milford Haven and Trimsaran, to ensure there are opportunities to enhance their understanding of their own strengths and to work on their wellness and self-worth.

“This builds strength in the community by enabling individuals to identify their skills through the workshops and courses that we provide. It also increases the individual’s confidence and resilience to enable them to access our Stepping Stones courses for adults thinking of returning to learning. It has been a pleasure to get to know individuals that we have been engaging with on a weekly basis and seeing their confidence flourish. We can’t wait to hold more on campus events like this again.”

Ken Dicks, Programme Manager for Advocacy and Sociology at ��ϳԹ�� who, along with two of his Students, Andrea Burson and Charlene Sadd, were part of the Campus Event, said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the Introduction to Sociology and Advocacy workshop that we ran for groups from Milford Haven and Trimsaran. The Community Profiling exercise produced some great conversations and by the end of the session everyone had shared their thoughts. Hopefully we have given the groups some ideas for the future, and we look forward to being involved in similar events in the future.”
