Award winning Theatre and Film director, Angharad Lee, has been appointed Section Lead in Acting at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts (WAVDA).
Angharad, born and bred in Porth, Rhondda, has been working as a director of theatre, opera and film since 2009 and was presented with the British Theatre Guide Director of the Year award in 2018. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, she has worked multiple performances with organisations such as the Welsh National Opera, Sherman Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre, The Other Room, Difficult Stage, Arad Goch, Taking Flight Theatre, RCT Theatres and Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru.
As well as being a freelance director she is also Artistic Director of Leeway Productions, whose flagship production of The Last 5 Years saw her develop a brand-new theatrical language to critical acclaim with choreographer Mark Smith, and whose 10-minute musicals project has provided a platform for new creative partnerships to flourish across Wales. Charged with directing the opening ceremonies of the National Eisteddfod of Wales over the past few years (Lloergan and Y Tylwyth), her directing credits span through national large-scale productions to grass roots one person shows.
Angharad is passionate about creative learning and embedding creativity across the curriculum in Wales and has worked with the University on various projects in the past. She’s now looking forward to continuing her work with the University’s students at the Wales Academy of Voice and Dramatic Arts. Angharad commented:
“I am very proud to step into this role after years of teaching and directing on various courses across WAVDA. This role has come at a very exciting time for the campus with our numbers increasing and the provision expanding.
I will be collaborating with Elen Bowman in coordinating the acting element of our courses and planning for the future to ensure that what we teach at WAVDA remains at the forefront and reflects the needs of the industry.â€
As he welcomed Angharad to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, Eilir Owen Grififths, WAVDA Academy Director (Creative), added:
“Angharad has been supporting the Academy for many years and I’m delighted that she has now joined the core team of staff. She brings a wealth of experience to the University and I’m looking forward to working with her to develop the provision in Cardiff for the future.â€
