Andrew Curl, who graduated from St David’s College, Lampeter, in 1974, has maintained a lifelong connection with the University, despite a highly successful international business career. His professional journey includes pivotal roles at SmithKline Beecham and GlaxoSmithKline, where he achieved remarkable success. He later served as Director General of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and founded several companies, including Pharma Partners Ltd and Enviva Care Ltd.

In receiving the award, Andrew Curl expressed his gratitude, saying: “Thank you for the honour that the University has bestowed on me today.  It’s 50 years to the day that I crossed the stage to receive my degree.  Fifty years has been three quarters of my life and fifty years is one quarter of the life of this institution here today.

The University has been a major part of my life and I hope that I’ve been able to contribute to that over the last years.  It’s given me so much, it’s given me lifelong friendships; friends that I made here and that I’m still in touch with. It’s given me a sense of purpose and place - most wonderful part of the country with the most hospitable and welcoming people.

Graduates – congratulations and good fortune on the journey ahead.â€

The ceremony took place during the University’s graduation ceremony today (12 July 2024) where Andrew Curl was presented with this esteemed recognition by Lampeter campus Provost, Gwilym Dyfri Jones. During the ceremony, Gwilym Dyfri Jones, praised his contributions: “In congratulating those of you graduating at this congregation today, I wonder how many of you will continue your association with this campus – with this University – in future years? As you take your leave today, I sincerely hope that you will keep a piece of Lampeter in your heart, that you will retain your love and respect for this very special place, that you will continue to support this institution wherever you may be in the future.

Andrew Curl – who I have the very great privilege of presenting for an Honorary Fellowship from the University today – graduated from this very campus back in 1974, when it was known as St David’s College, Lampeter. Fifty years ago. And, despite an incredibly successful business career, that has taken him to Latin America, the Far East, India, Africa and throughout Europe - he has always been a true champion of Lampeter, has always been faithful and generous in both time and spirit to his alma mater.â€

Throughout his career, Andrew Curl has been a passionate advocate and true ambassador for ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. His unwavering commitment to the University includes his significant contributions as a member of the University Council, where he played a crucial role in various committees, including the Strategy Committee, Finance and Resources Committee, and the Nominations and Governance Committee.

Gwilym Dyfri Jones continued, “Andrew’s contribution to this University has been quite outstanding. The institution has benefitted greatly from his vast experience and wisdom, his clarity of thought, along with his strong business acumen. A true gentleman, Lampeter through and through, we thank you Andrew for your strong commitment and unstinting efforts on our behalf. We thank you for your continued interest in this rather special corner of Wales and for acting as a true and loyal ambassador for the University throughout the years.â€

The University is proud to honour Andrew Curl, not only for his professional achievements but also for his unwavering support and dedication to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
