We recently welcomed back one of our talented graduates, Tyra Oseng-Rees, for an engaging guest lecture with students from our Civil Engineering & Architecture programmes. A pioneer in upcycling glass waste into architectural marvels, Tyra shared her inspiring entrepreneurial journey and passion for sustainable design, inspiring the next generation of professionals to embrace sustainability in their work.

Tyra’s academic journey at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø began in 2003 when she joined Swansea Institute of Higher Education (now ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø) to complete her bachelor’s degree in Product Design. It was during this time that she first experimented with recycled glass, exploring its use in paving slabs for visually impaired people. This early project sparked her passion for sustainable materials and set her on a path that would shape her career.

Her academic pursuits continued as she embarked on PhD research, developing and testing fused recycled glass materials. This work laid the foundation for Tyra’s pioneering efforts in repurposing waste glass into high-value architectural products - a field she would eventually make her own.

Determined to turn her research into real-world applications, Tyra transitioned into entrepreneurship, starting her own business, . Relying on personal savings and the support of a mentor who provided her with studio space, Tyra began crafting bespoke recycled glass artworks. Based in Wales, her business specialises in transforming discarded materials - ranging from bottles and construction glass to car windows - into breathtaking architectural and interior installations that reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainability.

One of the standout examples Tyra shared with the students was a collaborative project with ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø staff and students - the creation of a striking glass reception desk for the IQ building at the SA1 Swansea Waterfront campus (pictured above). Made from 3,000 discarded glass bottles, this feature embodies the principles of circular design and sustainable innovation. Speaking about her experience with the students, Tyra said:

“Having the opportunity to speak with the students about my innovative business that upcycles glass waste into architectural projects was great. Their questions shed light on how others perceive my work, and their active participation in my talk was incredibly rewarding.

“The conversations I had with students after the talk, along with their keen interest in incorporating recycled glass and circular economy principles into their own projects, reinforced the importance of sharing knowledge and inspiring change.â€

Returning to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø to share her experience was particularly meaningful for Tyra. She understands first-hand the challenges young designers and entrepreneurs face when trying to bridge the gap between academia and industry. By speaking with students, she hopes to encourage them to think creatively about sustainability and to highlight the importance of perseverance and collaboration, and innovation. Additionally, giving back to the institution that shaped her career feels like a natural full-circle moment - an opportunity to support and inspire students who, like her, are eager to make a difference.

She also shared insights into her latest work - the redevelopment of the Grade II listed Buttermarket in Cornwall - and how her innovative approach to upcycled glass has gained widespread recognition. Most recently, she was named Winner of Exterior Surface of the Year at the London Surface Design Show 2025, adding to her Wales Prestige Award 2023/24.

As Tyra continues to push the boundaries of upcycled design, her influence extends far beyond her own projects - shaping the way future architects and designers approach materials, innovation, and environmental responsibility. We are grateful for her visit and the inspiration she has passed on to our students.
