From Sixth Form to Law: My Journey to the CILEX Level 3 Programme
For many, the traditional university path is seen as the standard route to success, but for Lee-Angel Brown-Bennett, her journey into law took a different direction, one that aligns perfectly with her career aspirations and personal goals.
Today, as a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Level 3 CILEX Paralegal Apprentice, Level 3 CILEX Paralegal Apprentice, working in the Property department of Blake Morgan in Cardiff, Lee-Angel explains why choosing the apprenticeship route was the right decision for her.

The Path to CILEX
“My journey began with a strong academic foundation. I attended school from Year 7 to 11 and achieved excellent grades throughout and was on track to follow a traditional university path. However in Year 12, I discovered the apprenticeship route, which immediately piqued my interest. It offered a unique balance of practical work and academic learning that I felt would suit me better than the traditional university path.
After careful consideration, I decided not to continue into Year 13. Instead, I applied for a legal apprenticeship, a decision driven by the appeal of gaining real-world experience while studying. The CILEX Level 3 programme stood out because of its hands-on approach to legal training, enabling me to work alongside experienced professionals while developing my knowledge and skills. Avoiding student debt and earning a salary while studying were added bonuses that cemented my choice.
Balancing Work and Study
Working and studying simultaneously has been both challenging and rewarding. I have always enjoyed studying, so revising and learning come naturally to me. The CILEX apprenticeship programme allows me to apply what I learn in my studies directly to my role in the Property department. This practical application of knowledge not only reinforces my understanding of the law but also helps me develop skills that are essential for my career.
The support I’ve received at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø has been exceptional. The university provides a welcoming and engaging environment, with staff who are always ready to assist with any challenges I face. The balance between academic learning and practical experience has been a key part of my success, and the resources available—such as career advice, assignment guidance have been instrumental in helping me stay focused and motivated.
Working in such an inspiring environment has provided me with endless opportunities to network, expand my knowledge, and build professional connections. The hands-on nature of the apprenticeship has made learning more engaging and rewarding, as I can see the tangible impact of my work on clients and the business.
That said, balancing academic deadlines with work responsibilities has required discipline and excellent time-management skills. During busy periods, it can be challenging to juggle competing priorities, but I’ve developed a structured approach that helps me stay on track. The experience has made me more resilient and determined to achieve my goals, even in the face of challenges.
Inspiration and Future Ambitions
The apprenticeship has inspired me in many ways. Seeing the practical side of law in action has deepened my passion for the field. It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness the impact of my work on clients and the legal process, which motivates me to keep learning and growing.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to qualify as a solicitor. While I am still exploring which areas of law I may want to specialise in, my current work in property law has been incredibly fulfilling. I aspire to work in a role where I can contribute to the success of my firm, support clients, and continue my professional development while making a positive impact on others.
Advice for Aspiring Legal Apprentices
For those considering a similar route, my advice is to remain focused, organised, and open-minded. An apprenticeship requires discipline, especially when balancing work and study, but it also offers unparalleled opportunities for growth. The hands-on experience makes what you learn come alive, and the real-world skills you gain are invaluable for your future career.
Believe in your abilities, even when faced with challenges. There may be moments of doubt, but perseverance and determination will help you overcome them.
If you’re passionate about law and eager to grow, this could be the perfect option for you. It’s a rewarding journey that equips you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in the legal profession.â€
