Dafydd Millns - Outdoor Adventure Education

Dafydd Millns' ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Experience

Prior to University I completed a level 3 diploma in Outdoor Adventure Education in Coleg Sir Gar (Graig). Being fuelled by my own lived experiences the value in outdoor based intervention was apparent. In turn this pathway towards a BA was obvious.

The practical capacity of the degree complimented my vocational and experiential preference in regard to learning. In addition to this however, complimenting my diploma I’ve since developed a deeper passion and understanding as to the value of academia in such a practical field.

Alongside this realisation I’ve been able to apply theory to practice throughout the three years of my degree which has allowed me to develop a unique perspective on practice, facilitation and management. Expanding, the opportunity to study through the medium of Welsh meant that what I was learning and writing about was directly transferable to  the area in that I was working.

Furthermore, the support from the ever so passionate lecturers meant that I’d be able to have a constructive conversation whilst delving into all aspects of the industry. Moving forward I’ve since been supported by the University to attend the Gathering of Adventure Therapy Europe (GATE) based in Latvia whereas I hope to make connections and contacts prior to beginning a MSC in psychology in September.

What is your favourite thing about Carmarthen campus?

The facilities at Carmarthen campus including the gym and library allowed for me to develop a healthy lifestyle alongside both academia and physical health, this particularly being key given the nature of my degree. In addition to this, intimate support from staff from both facilities meant that I felt like a part of the community throughout my studies. â€¯

Why did you choose ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø?

I chose ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø given its locality to a variety of natural environments including coastlines, crags, rivers and mountains. This only complimented my desire and passion to work in the outdoors. Additionally, it meant that I could continue to work alongside companies and organisations that I’d made connections with prior to university.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

After graduating I hope to study a MSC in the Psychology of Mental Health and Wellbeing. In doing so I hope to gain clinical accreditation in which I can compliment with my outdoors skills in order to practice in the outdoors and give back to young people in care/crisis etc. Alongside these I hope to further develop my skills and abilities within research of adventure therapy within South Wales and beyond.

What is your favourite thing about Outdoor Adventure Education?

My favourite thing about the Outdoor Adventure Education course must be the intimacy and relationships which were developed throughout the course. Given class numbers alongside the nature of what we did including group projects, and expeditions the relationships formed were very strong. As a result of this it meant that our community was ever supportive, caring and meant that the learning environment was idyllic. Additionally given the practical nature contact time with lecturers was exceptional allowing for deeper connections in being formed and feeling supported throughout.
